Triphala powder is Ayurveda’s most famous formula — literally “three fruits” in Sanskrit: amla (Indian gooseberry), bibhitaki and haritaki, dried and ground together in the classical proportions. It has been prepared and taken daily across India for well over a thousand years, traditionally as a gentle evening or morning ritual. Sattva Superfoods supplies it as it should be: the three fruits, powdered, in a 125 g pouch — nothing else.

The three fruits

  • Amla (Emblica officinalis) — the tart Indian gooseberry, one of the most revered fruits in Ayurvedic tradition and naturally rich in vitamin C
  • Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica) — a large forest fruit with a long record in classical Ayurvedic texts
  • Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) — sometimes called the “king of medicines” in Tibetan tradition, the most storied of the three

The blend’s endurance is the point: formulas come and go, but triphala has been in continuous daily use since before Malta’s medieval walls went up. Modern interest has followed the tradition, and the powder now sits in wellness routines worldwide.

How to take triphala powder

  • Stir ½–1 teaspoon into a glass of warm water; drink before bed or first thing in the morning — the traditional method
  • Blend into smoothies or juice if the taste needs company
  • Mix with a little honey as a paste, another classical preparation
  • Add to herbal tea for a gentler introduction

The flavour is honestly bitter-astringent — that’s authentic triphala, and most regulars come to appreciate it as part of the ritual. Start with a small amount and build up gradually.

Buying triphala well

Two things distinguish a good triphala: that it contains only the three fruits (no fillers, flow agents or “proprietary blend” padding), and that it is fresh enough to smell fruity-sour when the pouch opens. Ours is the plain, unadulterated blend — check the ingredient list on anything else you compare it with.

Sensible use

Triphala is a food, not a medicine, and it should be treated with a food’s common sense: take it consistently rather than heroically, alongside a balanced diet. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or managing a digestive condition, speak to your doctor before adding it to your routine. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to take it? Tradition favours last thing at night or first thing in the morning, away from meals — pick whichever you’ll actually keep.

Can I take it every day? Daily use is exactly how the tradition employs it; start small and be consistent.

Powder or capsules? Purists take the powder in warm water — in Ayurveda, tasting the formula is considered part of taking it.

How long does the pouch last? At ½–1 teaspoon daily, 125 g covers one to two months.

The ritual is the method

What strikes newcomers most about triphala is that the tradition prescribes not just a powder but a practice: the same small dose, at the same quiet moment of the day, indefinitely. That rhythm is worth copying regardless of your philosophy — single doses of anything rarely amount to much, while small consistent habits compound. Put the pouch next to the kettle, tie it to a cue you already have (the last cup of the evening, the first glass of the morning), and give it an honest month before you judge. That is how the formula has been used for a millennium, and it remains the best usage advice anyone can give.
