Hemp protein is what remains when hemp seeds give up their oil: the pressed seed cake, milled into a green-flecked powder that keeps the seed’s protein, fibre and character intact. Sattva Superfoods’ hemp protein is certified organic, single-ingredient, grown in Romania — one of Europe’s historic hemp heartlands — and packed in the UK in a 250 g resealable pouch.
The whole-seed logic
Most protein powders are isolates — protein engineered away from its food. Hemp protein is the opposite philosophy: a minimally processed food that happens to be high in protein. The seed contributes all nine essential amino acids the body cannot make, alongside the ones it can, plus both soluble and insoluble fibre in quantities isolates simply don’t carry. Protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass — nutrition’s officially recognised phrasing — and hemp delivers it with the seed’s fibre and minerals still aboard.
What the label means by 3:1
Hemp seeds carry their fats in a roughly 3:1 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 — a balance nutritionists note approvingly because Western diets usually skew far further toward omega-6. The pressed powder retains a modest share of those oils, including gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), the omega-6 variant hemp shares with borage and evening primrose. We state the composition and stop there; the seed’s numbers speak well enough for themselves.
How to use it
- Post-training shakes — with banana and nut milk; hemp’s nutty, earthy flavour suits chocolate and coffee blends especially
- Porridge and overnight oats — a scoop stirred in lifts breakfast’s protein without changing its character
- Baking — swap a few tablespoons of flour in pancakes, muffins and protein bars for a nutty, wholemeal-ish result
- Smoothie bowls — blended thick with frozen berries, where the green flecks look intentional
- Savoury use — whisked into soups or veggie-burger mixes as a binder with benefits
An honest word on texture and taste
Hemp protein is a whole food and behaves like one: nuttier, greener and more textured than a whey isolate, closer to ground seeds than to milkshake powder. Blended with fruit it is entirely pleasant; drinkers expecting dessert-flavoured isolate should recalibrate toward wholesome. The fibre content is the giveaway and the reward.
Frequently asked questions
Will it affect a drug test? Hemp protein comes from food-grade hemp seed, which is not intoxicating — it is a food, sold as one.
Complete protein? Yes — all essential amino acids are present, which is rare and welcome among plant proteins.
How much per serving? Two to three tablespoons is the customary scoop; the pouch suits a couple of weeks of daily shakes.
Romania’s hemp heritage
Hemp is one of Europe’s oldest fibre and food crops, and Romania kept the tradition alive through the twentieth century when most of the continent abandoned it — the country was long Europe’s largest hemp grower, its rural households retting stalks and pressing seed oil as a matter of course. Modern organic certification sits comfortably on that old agronomy: hemp needs no pesticides worth mentioning, grows fast enough to outcompete weeds, and improves the soil it leaves. As field crops go, it is about as honest as farming gets — which suits a protein sold on minimal processing.
Building it into a training week
Hemp’s fibre makes it more satiating and slower-release than isolates, which suggests its best positions: breakfast porridge on training days, the post-session shake when the next meal is hours away, or the baking protein for bars that must survive a gym bag. Pairing it with rice or pea protein in the same shake is common practice among plant-based lifters balancing amino profiles — and pairing it with fruit is common sense. Two to three tablespoons daily is the customary rhythm, and the pouch’s 250 g suits a fortnight of exactly that.
