Real Celtic sea salt is not made in a factory — it is grown in the weather. Sattva’s Raw Organic Celtic Sea Salt is hand-harvested from the world-famous salt marshes of Guérande, France, where Atlantic seawater is drawn through clay-lined pans and left to the sun and wind, exactly as it has been for over a thousand years. Nothing is bleached, nothing is refined, nothing is added — what reaches your kitchen is the salt as the sea made it.

Why Celtic sea salt looks and tastes different

The first thing you notice is the colour: a soft grey, picked up from the mineral-rich clay of the salt pans. The second is the texture — slightly moist, because unrefined Celtic sea salt naturally retains a little of the ocean’s moisture along with its naturally occurring trace minerals. Refined table salt has all of this stripped away and anti-caking agents added back in; this salt has neither happened to it. The flavour is rounder and more complex than ordinary salt — briny, mineral and clean — which is why chefs reach for it as a finishing salt.

In the kitchen

  • Finishing — a pinch over grilled fish, steak, roast vegetables, tomatoes or even chocolate desserts, added just before serving
  • Everyday cooking — soups, stews, pasta water, sauces and marinades
  • Baking — bread doughs and focaccia love a mineral salt
  • Salads and dressings — dissolves into vinaigrettes with a depth table salt can’t give

What makes ours worth choosing

  • Hand-harvested in the historic Guérande salt marshes of France
  • Raw, unrefined and naturally sun-dried
  • No additives, no anti-caking agents, no bleaching
  • Naturally rich in trace minerals, with the distinctive grey colour and moist texture of true Celtic sea salt
  • 500 g pack — the right size for the kitchen counter

Storage

Keep it in a sealed jar or its pouch, away from direct heat. The slight moistness is natural and correct — it is a sign the salt has not been kiln-dried or chemically treated. If it clumps a little, that is the absence of anti-caking agents doing exactly what it should.

Part of the Sattva range

Sattva Superfoods is our own label: single-ingredient staples, honestly sourced. This is the same salt in our kitchen at home. Cooking for a crowd or refilling regularly? The identical salt is available in a 1 kg value pack.

Celtic sea salt vs table salt

Table salt is mined or vacuum-refined, stripped to nearly pure sodium chloride, then dosed with anti-caking agents so it pours. Celtic sea salt goes the other way: nothing is removed and nothing is added. It keeps the trace minerals the ocean put there, which is what gives it colour, moisture and that fuller flavour — and because the crystals are coarser and more flavourful, many cooks find they simply use less. Compared with pink Himalayan salt (a mined rock salt), Celtic salt is a harvested sea salt: moister, greyer, and to most palates noticeably more briny and alive.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Celtic sea salt damp? Because it is supposed to be — genuine unrefined sea salt holds residual ocean moisture. Dry, free-flowing salt means refining and additives.

Is it coarse or fine? These are traditional coarse grey crystals — perfect between the fingers for seasoning and finishing, and easy to grind finer if a recipe needs it.

Does salt expire? No. Stored sealed and dry-ish, it keeps indefinitely; only the texture changes slightly over time.
