The SiS GO Isotonic Energy Gel is the product that made Science in Sport’s name — an energy gel formulated to be isotonic in the sachet, so it can be taken without water. This is the variety pack: seven 60 ml gels, one of each flavour, each delivering 22 g of carbohydrate.
In short: the SiS GO Isotonic Energy Gel carries 22 g of carbohydrate per 60 ml sachet and needs no water to take. This variety box holds seven SiS GO Isotonic Energy Gel sachets, one of each flavour.
Why the SiS GO Isotonic Energy Gel needs no water
Most energy gels are concentrated syrups. The body has to dilute them before the carbohydrate can be absorbed, which is why the instructions always say to wash them down — and why taking one without water can leave your stomach unhappy mid-effort. GO Isotonic is mixed at a concentration close to that of body fluids, so it is already at the point where absorption can begin. In practice that means a thinner, less cloying gel, no bottle to plan around, and one less thing to carry on a long ride or run.
What is in one 60 ml sachet
- Carbohydrate — 22 g, of which sugars 0.7 g
- Energy — 87 kcal / 370 kJ
- Fat — 0 g
- Protein — 0 g
- Salt — 0.04 g
The carbohydrate is maltodextrin rather than simple sugar, which is why the sugar figure is so low for a 22 g carbohydrate load — and why it does not taste sickly at hour three.
What is in the box
Seven sachets, 60 ml each, 420 ml in total — one each of apple, lemon & lime, blackcurrant, orange, pineapple, pink grapefruit and tropical. A sensible way to find out which flavours you can still stomach late in a long effort before committing to a full box of one.
Ingredients and storage
Water, maltodextrin (33%), flavouring, gelling agents (gellan gum, xanthan gum), acidity regulators (citric acid, sodium citrate), preservatives (sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate), sweetener (acesulfame K), sodium chloride, antioxidant (ascorbic acid), colour (beta-carotene). Composition varies slightly by flavour — check the individual sachet. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Manufactured in the United Kingdom.
How to use it
Take up to three sachets per 60 minutes during exercise, as required. No water is needed, though there is no harm in taking one with a drink. Tear the notched corner and take it in one go rather than sipping. A common approach on longer efforts is one gel every 30 to 45 minutes from the first hour onwards, adjusted to how hard you are working and how well your stomach is coping.
Fuelling in Maltese heat
Riding or running here in summer, hydration and fuelling compete for the same stomach capacity — every mouthful of water spent washing down a syrup gel is a mouthful not doing its actual job. An isotonic gel removes that trade-off, which is why it earns its place on long coastal rides and anything over about 90 minutes. Pair it with a protein recovery shake afterwards from our performance nutrition range.
Who is it for?
Endurance athletes — road cyclists, runners past the 90-minute mark, triathletes, and anyone doing long sessions where carrying extra water is a real cost. The variety pack is the right starting point if you have not settled on a flavour, or if flavour fatigue sets in on longer events.
Frequently asked questions
Do I really not need water with it? Correct — that is the point of an isotonic gel. Drink to thirst as normal, but you do not need water to process the gel itself.
Does it contain caffeine? No. GO Isotonic is the caffeine-free gel in the SiS range.
Is it vegan? The listed ingredients are plant-based and contain no declared allergens; check the individual sachet if this is critical for you.
Where can I check the manufacturer’s spec? Science in Sport publishes the full range at scienceinsport.com.
