Creatine is a tiny combination of the three amino acids L-arginine, glycine and L-methionine. It is found in abundance in the heart and skeletal muscles of humans and animals, but it is also present in all mammalian cells, albeit tiny, as a storehouse for phosphate.
Cells use the molecule adenosine triphosphate, also known as ATP, for energy, converting it to adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and adenosine monophosphate (AMP). Creatine is stored in the body as creatine phosphate, precisely as an energy store, and then releases the phosphate to turn ADP back into ATP
Supplementation of creatine increases the overall level of creatine phosphate in cells. A higher level of creatine phosphate results in a better conversion rate of ADP to ATP.
